Hi, I'm Alicia.

I’m a private tutor and former classroom teacher, and I work mainly with students who need clearer explanations, more thoughtful feedback, and a calmer place to think.

My background is in English and Humanities education, and I’ve spent the past nine years teaching students from early secondary school through university preparation. I support essay writing, reading comprehension, source analysis, revision planning, and subject confidence more broadly.

I became a tutor because I kept meeting students who were capable, curious, and trying hard—but were getting lost in speed, pressure, or a teaching style that simply didn’t fit them.

In lessons, students can expect patient explanation, direct but kind feedback, and enough time to understand not just what to write or say, but why.

How tutoring works

There’s no fixed curriculum here. The plan below describes how we get started; what we actually work on is shaped entirely around your coursework and goals.

Short consultation

A free 20-minute call or video chat to talk about what’s going on — the subject, the school’s curriculum, upcoming deadlines, and what kind of support would help most.

Learning assessment

In the first paid session, I spend time understanding where a student’s understanding is solid and where it gets shaky, using real coursework rather than a generic placement test.

A personalized lesson plan

I put together a loose plan for the coming weeks — which topics we’ll focus on and in what order — and share it with you before we begin regular lessons.

Regular lessons

Weekly or biweekly sessions, in person or online, following the plan but adjusting week to week based on what’s coming up in class and where the student needs more time.

Progress updates

Short written notes after each lesson, and a brief check-in every few weeks with parents or the student, covering what’s improved and what we’re still working on.

All lessons are billed per session, at the rate listed below — there’s no separate registration fee, materials fee, or minimum package.

Extended Lesson

In-person lessons take place at my home office near SE Hawthorne, or at a public library by arrangement. Online lessons use video call with a shared digital whiteboard. Payment is due after each session by card or bank transfer — I don’t require packages or upfront payment for multiple sessions.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons are available online or in person in Vancouver. The most suitable arrangement depends on the student’s location, schedule, and learning preferences.

What is needed for online tutoring?

Usually a laptop or desktop computer, a stable internet connection, and a quiet place to work are enough. A headset can help if the student shares space with others.

How do cancellations work?

If a lesson is cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, it can usually be rescheduled without charge. Short-notice cancellations may still be charged unless there is illness or an emergency.

How does payment work?

I invoice after each session, payable by card or bank transfer within five days. There’s no package requirement or upfront commitment — you can stop at any time with no penalty.

Do I need to provide materials?

Yes. Where useful, I provide lesson notes, practice materials, revision prompts, or planning sheets as part of the lesson fee.

How involved should I be?

Yes. Parents or guardians can receive brief progress updates, especially for younger students. I also want students to have enough room to speak honestly about what they find difficult.

How do you approach safeguarding?

Lessons are conducted professionally and with clear boundaries. For students under 18, scheduling and key communication are handled with a parent or guardian. Online and in-person settings should always be appropriate for safe learning.

What happens in the first consultation?

We discuss the student’s year level, current challenges, subject goals, preferred lesson format, and any immediate concerns. It is an information call, not a sales pitch.
